A study conducted at Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University revealed that the soil characteristics in the city center of Burdur could increase the impact of earthquake tremors in certain areas.

The study examined the soil structure at different points in the city and determined that each region of Burdur does not behave the same way during an earthquake. It was observed that tremors could grow more significantly in areas with softer and thicker alluvial layers, especially around Lake Burdur.

The research indicates that when assessing the earthquake safety of structures, not only the magnitude of the earthquake but also the characteristics of the soil on which the building is located should be taken into account. It is noted that the proximity of the natural vibration characteristics of the soil and structures in some areas could increase the impact of the tremors.

It is stated that the findings provide important information for planning new construction areas in Burdur and evaluating the earthquake safety of existing structures. It is particularly emphasized that some areas around the lake should be treated more carefully in future planning efforts.

The study was published in the Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering journal. The research was conducted by Mehmet Alpyürür from the Department of Civil Engineering at MAKÜ.
