These findings provide valuable information that should be considered in training processes and hospital management policies to enhance patient safety
The research conducted by Ayşe Uçak from Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Faculty of Health Sciences, Arzu Tat Çatal, and Fatma Cebeci from Akdeniz University revealed the perceptions of nursing students about patient safety culture and their experiences related to factors affecting safe care in the hospital environment. The study, conducted in the 2020-2021 academic year at a university's nursing faculty, collected quantitative data from 38 intern nursing students and qualitative data from 9 students. The study showed that nursing students' perceptions of patient safety culture were high and that they had significant experiences related to many factors affecting safe care.
In the research, students' perceptions of patient safety culture were measured with a high average of 3.24 ± 0.49. Factors affecting safe care include healthcare professionals, the care environment, and patients and caregivers. It was emphasized that healthcare professionals' knowledge and practices, communication, and empathy skills have a direct impact on patient safety. Additionally, it was determined that nurse shortages, heavy workloads, and long working hours negatively affect patient safety. It was stated that material shortages and device calibration problems in hospitals also threaten patient safety.
Students stated that the psychological and physical conditions, communication styles, and education levels of patients and caregivers also affect safe care. It was concluded that the harmonious cooperation of patients and caregivers with healthcare professionals increases patient safety.
The research is significant in showing that intern nursing students have high perceptions of patient safety culture and significant experiences related to various factors affecting safe care. These findings provide valuable information that should be considered in educational processes and hospital management policies to increase patient safety. It is noted that healthcare institutions and professionals need to reconsider their roles and responsibilities in ensuring patient safety.
