Violence Against Women During Pregnancy: Problems and Solutions
Yayın Tarihi | 14 September 2024, Saturday

Violence against women, especially during pregnancy, emerges as a serious issue worldwide. Research shows that 35% of women globally have experienced physical or sexual violence from their partners, and 38% of female homicides are committed by partners. This situation seriously threatens women's health during pregnancy and the postpartum period. In Turkey, there is insufficient data in this area, and more research and intervention are needed.
Obstetric Violence: Cultural Differences and the Role of Health Professionals
Obstetric violence, which is the physical, psychological, or sexual violence women are subjected to during pregnancy, is associated with factors such as young age, low income, and having experienced violence before. Cultural differences can affect the prevalence of this violence. Violence can lead to very significant mental health issues, such as postpartum depression. At this point, health professionals, especially nurses, have a major role to play. Routine screening for violence during pregnancy check-ups is critically important to protect the health of the mother and baby.
Urgent Need for Intervention in Turkey and Worldwide
There is an urgent need for interventions to reduce the negative effects of violence during pregnancy on women's health in Turkey and worldwide. It is necessary to identify risk factors for the prevention of violence and to take measures against these factors. Strengthening support mechanisms for particularly vulnerable groups and implementing effective intervention strategies by collaborating among health systems is important.
